Climate Ready Places: More information

Below, you will find extra information on the adaptation interventions suggested in our Climate Ready Places tool, including some examples of improvements all ready in place. If you have a project of your own which would fit under one of the categories below, let us know via [email protected] and we will feature it on the site.

‘The Five Streets’

greenspace scotland has been working with Glasgow City Council and local partners on a programme called ‘The Five Streets’. This programme used placemaking techniques to develop and propose green infrastructure options for five key urban settings: Byres Road, Saracen Street, the Barras, Shawlands and George Street. This work was supported by Glasgow City Council and SEPA.

Urban Roots – Market gardening in Glasgow

Urban Roots evolved from a community based gardening club in Toryglen, Glasgow. It has set up a vibrant Community Market Garden on a former vacant site. The garden has been very successful; not only in producing fruit and vegetables for the local residents, but also as a catalyst for community led learning and regeneration within the area: http://www.centralscotlandgreennetwork.org/resources/publications/category/50-case-studies?download=187:urban-roots-market-gardening-in-glasgow

(4) Replace Carparks

Case studies:

Fresh Air Squares

A ‘Fresh Air Square’ is a portable, micro-park or ‘parklet’ that reclaims car parking spaces for a period of one week to a year to improve the local environment and raise awareness about air pollution. Team London Bridge and partners TfL, King's College London, CJS Plants and Vauxhall One are bringing one of London's first parklets to Tooley Street in October 2015. The project follows a scheme that has become very popular in other countries such as the US, in which 1-2 parking spaces are turned into mini green hubs for members of the public to enjoy.

Pocket Park Bethnal Green, London

Construction has begun on a new sustainable pocket park that will turn a 12-car parking lot in Bethnal Green into a multi-functional green space. http://www.eastlondonlines.co.uk/2014/01/pocket-park-to-replace-car-parking-lot-in-bethnal-green/

Machrihanish golf course

Through close collaboration between DMK Golf Design and Scottish Natural Heritage the new golf course at Machrihanish Dunes was designed not only to safeguard the nationally important conservation interests, but also to be adaptable to changing patterns of erosion and coastal change. The morphology of the dunes has been retained, and there are no hard coastal protection works and development on the mobile dune crest. As a result the golf course is more sustainable, resilient and in harmony with the landscape. http://www.sgeg.org.uk/documents/Publications%20and%20Case%20Studies/SGEG%20Env%20Case%20Study%20-%20Course%20Construction%20&%20Nature%20-%20Designated%20Area%20-%20Machrihanish%20Dunes.pdf
